Election 2024: 19 Pick Forms To Run As Independent Presidential Candidates | Politics
Dr Serebour Quaicoe, director of training at the Electoral Commission (EC), says 19 persons have so far picked nomination forms to contest as independent presidential candidates in the forthcoming general election.
According to him, while there was no cost to picking up the forms, the aspirants would have to pay a fee when submitting the completed forms.
Speaking to the media in Accra, Dr Quaicoe explained that though some individuals may pick the forms from the EC, they might not follow through with their candidacy.
The constitution stipulates that candidates must be at least 40 years old, a taxpayer, and must not hold allegiance to any foreign country.
“Once a person meets these qualifications, they are eligible to obtain the nomination forms,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Quaicoe has also clarified that the GHC0.50 fee for checking voter registration details online went to service providers, not to the EC.
The EC introduced a short code, *71151#, allowing voters to verify their registration details ahead of the 2024 General Election at 50 pesewas.
“It is for service charges, and not for the Electoral Commission. If the money was to come to the Electoral Commission, then that is our money for us to account for but it is for the service charges. If you use MTN, the money goes to MTN; if you use Telecel, it goes to Telecel,” he explained.
