Redeem the Image of the Ghana Cedi and Stop Calling for a Debate – Jinapor tells Bawumia | Politics

The National Democratic Congress’ Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region, John Abdulai Jinapor, has called on the flag bearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to channel his energy into addressing the alarming rate of depreciation of the Ghana Cedi to mitigate the surge in fuel prices instead of calling for debates ahead of the December elections.

John Jinapor, who is a ranking member of the Mines and Energy committee of Ghana’s Parliament as well as a member of the Finance committee, urged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to redeem his image by working hard to redeem the Cedi’s lost glory.

His comments comes in response to a recent hike in prices of petroleum products.

Addressing the press, the Yapei Kusagwu lawmaker alleged that the government has caused an unpardonable financial loss to the state for not being able to implement effectively the gold-for-oil policy, a policy meant to control the continuous hike in fuel prices.

Mr. Jinapor said, “the managers of the economy have to sit up. And clearly, the Bank of Ghana is losing it. While the Bank of Ghana is spending millions of Cedis and dollars on the gold-for-oil programme, the currency is not stabilising.”

“The Cedi is depreciating, fuel prices are going up, cost of living is going up, and everybody is suffering. But worst of all, wages and salaries are stagnating. Wages and salaries are not going up. The managers of the economy have lost it.”

He further stated, “And I think that Dr. Bawumia, instead of calling for a debate, should rather spend some time concentrating on managing the economy. He should stop the unnecessary call for a debate, do his work as the head of the economic management team and ensure that we deal with the ever-rising cost of fuel.”
