EC Dismisses Allegations Of Ongoing Voter Registration, Vote Transfer Exercises | Politics

The Electoral Commission (EC) has denied undertaking voter registration and vote transfer exercises.

It stated that the 2024 Limited Voter Registration Exercise concluded on May 29, 2024, while the Transfer of Votes Exercise ended on June 14, 2024, but was reopened for students in public universities, prisoners and security personnel from July 3 to 5, 2024.

“Indeed, all the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits used for the Transfer for students were deactivated after the exercise. Therefore they could not have been used to register voters or undertake transfers as alleged by the two in the videos,” it said.

This was contained in a statement issued and signed by the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, in response to two videos featuring two women circulating on social media that the EC was undertaking secret voter registration and voter transfers.

False

“The commission states categorically that both allegations are false,” adding that the allegations were “calculated mischief” aimed at tarnishing the commission’s image and causing disaffection ahead of the December 7, 2024 general election.

It said the commission had, therefore, called on the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute those behind the fabrications. “The commission finds these allegations dangerous to our democratic process and we entreat the general public to disregard them,” the statement said.

The commission further urged all stakeholders, especially the political parties, to stop propagating falsehood which has the potential of undermining state institutions and destroying the peace and stability of the nation.
