GMeT in Collaboration with WMO Introduces Urban Flash Floods Forecasting System for Prediction During Raining Season | General News


The Ghana Meteorological Agency with the partnership of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has introduced new forecasting system named as the Urban Flash Floods forecasting system to help predict floods during raining periods.

This tool is introduced to help the Volta Flood and Drought Management project and to be used by the Ghana Meteorological Agency to help the people close to the Volta Basin.

Speaking with Peace FM News, the Ag. Director General for the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Mr Eric Essuman stated that the Urban Flash Floods forecasting system (UFFFS) will help to take into account the impact associated with the flash flood hazards and to provide impact based warning for the Ghana Meteorological Agency.

He said that the testing of the Urban Flash Floods forecasting system will take place at Tamale in the Northern region.

He also said that the tool is made for only those around the Volta Basin which is made up of six countries among them are Burkina Faso, Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Mali and Benin.

He, therefore, said the Flash Floods forecasting system will help detect the amount of rain and how the rain can result into flooding and can promote the safety of livelihood around the Volta Basin.

Mr Eric Essuman made this known during a Workshop organized by the Ghana Meteorological Agency and World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

Mr Eric Essuman again advised Ghanaians to pay particular attention to every forecast the Ghana Meteorological Agency brings out for our own good.

The World Meteorological Organization representative, Ramesh Tripathi also talked about how good the Urban Flash Floods forecasting system can help eradicate flooding around the Volta Basin.
